Why aerate?

Your lawn is probably thirsty for air, not more water

Over time, mowing, foot traffic, and our heavy Davis County soils press the ground tight. Roots can’t push down, water runs off instead of soaking in, and the grass thins out no matter how much you water.

Core aeration fixes that at the source. The machine pulls thousands of finger-sized plugs out of the soil, opening channels for air, water, and fertilizer to reach the root zone. Roots grow deeper, and the lawn gets tougher against summer heat.

Fall: the best time

Warm soil and cool air make fall perfect for aerating and seeding cool-season Utah grasses.

Spring: a strong start

Great for compacted or clay yards that need help before summer stress hits.

Core vs. liquid aeration

Why I only do core aeration

Core aeration

  • Physically removes soil plugs
  • Relieves compaction immediately
  • Cuts through thatch
  • Perfect seedbed for overseeding

Liquid “aeration”

  • Sprayed on, nothing removed
  • No open holes for air or roots
  • No channels for seed to land in
  • Results are hard to see

Preston Hinckley, owner of Wasatch Aeration, on a Davis County lawn

Meet the owner

Hi, I’m Preston. I’ll be the one at your door.

I started Wasatch Aeration because I believe lawn care should be simple: show up on time, do the job right, and be honest about what a yard really needs. I live right here in Davis County, and these are my neighbors’ lawns.

When you book with me, there’s no call center and no rotating crew. I flag your sprinklers, run the machine, and take care of your lawn like it’s my own. If something isn’t worth your money, I’ll tell you.

FAQ

Lawn aeration questions, answered

Don’t see yours? Text me and I’ll answer it straight.

When is the best time to aerate a lawn in Davis County?

Fall is the best time for most Utah lawns, roughly late August through October, because cool-season grasses are actively growing and seed germinates well in warm soil and cool air. Spring (April to May) is a great second option, especially for compacted or clay-heavy yards.

What is the difference between core and liquid aeration?

Core aeration uses a machine to physically pull plugs of soil out of the lawn, instantly creating space for air, water, and roots. Liquid aeration is a spray that claims to loosen soil chemically, but it does not remove any soil, so it cannot relieve compaction the same way. I only do core aeration.

Do I need to mark my sprinkler heads?

Nope. I flag every sprinkler head myself before the machine touches the lawn. Just let me know about any shallow lines, invisible dog fences, or other buried surprises.

What should I do before and after aeration?

Water a day or two before so the soil is moist, and mow a little shorter than usual. Afterward, leave the plugs where they fall (they break down in a week or two) and keep watering normally, especially if we overseeded.
